Fiji’s Farming Revolution: How One Man Transformed Sugarcane Cultivation

In the Solove Sector of Fiji, a notable success story is emerging, showcasing the determination and ingenuity within the local sugarcane farming community. Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two and the founder of Isharat Farm Services, has significantly impacted the livelihoods of many cane farmers by becoming a tractor service provider, fulfilling a vital need in the industry.

After leaving school in Form 4, Murti began his career as a cane harvester before moving up to a managerial position at Food Process (Batiri Citrus Farm). He discovered a promising opportunity in Fiji’s sugarcane sector with a new initiative put forth by Fiji Sugar Corporation.

In 2022, with the backing of the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited and the Ministry of Agriculture, Murti took a significant step to become a transport service provider. He recognized a shortage of tractors in the sector, which hindered farmers’ ability to prepare their lands.

“I saw a shortage of tractors in the sector, which made it difficult for farmers to prepare their land,” Murti stated. He noted that many farmers were unable to afford upfront payments, but with FSC’s business plan concept and work order system, he was able to provide services without requiring immediate cash.

Starting with just one tractor, Murti utilized his experience from Food Process to assist local farmers with land preparation. His commitment to offering dependable services quickly gained attention among farmers in the area.

Today, his business has seen substantial growth, now operating six tractors and a variety of essential tools, including disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers, all crucial for sugarcane farming.

“With perseverance and support from FSC field officials and the team, I was able to grow the business,” he remarked. “The work order system allowed me to run it like a proper business, and the farmers benefited, too.”

In addition, Murti has resumed cane farming himself, cultivating 7.5 acres of cane this year with plans for further expansion.
