The government has reiterated its strong commitment to combatting the invasive pest known as the Fall Armyworm, emphasizing the need for collective action across the nation. Minister for Agriculture Vatimi Rayalu highlighted that this pest threatens food security, farmer livelihoods, and overall economic growth.

Rayalu underscored the urgency of addressing this formidable challenge through various methods, including scientific pest control techniques and grassroots initiatives within the agricultural community. He noted the pest’s apparent preference for maize, a staple crop within Fiji, underlining the importance of immediate action.

To tackle the situation, the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF), in collaboration with the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji and the Ministry, is spearheading a comprehensive response strategy. During his visit to affected farms in Uciwai, Nadi, Rayalu praised the dedication and ongoing efforts of frontline personnel who are actively managing this pest outbreak.

The minister pointed out that the Fall Armyworm does not adhere to farm borders, necessitating an inclusive and coordinated approach for effective control. He called upon all farmers to stay alert, report any signs of infestation promptly, and adhere to recommended control measures.

This initiative is part of a larger context, reflecting the authorities’ commitment to safeguarding Fiji’s agricultural landscape. Authorities are optimistic that with ongoing vigilance and cooperation among farmers and local communities, Fiji can effectively mitigate the impact of the Fall Armyworm and ensure food security for its citizens.

Additionally, ongoing educational campaigns aim to inform farmers about the specifics of the pest and effective management techniques, promoting a proactive stance in the agriculture sector. Such coordinated actions not only provide a tactical approach to pest management but also foster a spirit of resilience and community support among the agricultural stakeholders in Fiji.
