Farmers in Fiji are facing significant challenges in accessing government assistance primarily due to their remote locations and the lack of internet connectivity. Many of these farmers are situated in highland areas where access to online resources is scarce, limiting their ability to take advantage of available support programs.
During the Farmers Economic Summit, Josua Nalewakalou, Chair of the Fiji Crops and Livestock Council, called on the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development to address these connectivity issues. He emphasized the urgency of installing communication towers in areas lacking service, asserting that the shift towards online application processes is leaving many farmers behind. Nalewakalou pleaded with the government to expedite these installations so that farmers can fully benefit from the resources available to them.
Mitieli Cama from the Ministry responded by noting the high costs associated with setting up network towers, which can reach nearly half a million dollars. He acknowledged the financial concerns of mobile network providers like Vodafone and Digicel regarding return on investment but mentioned that the government is working on rolling out Starlink internet services to enhance connectivity, starting in provincial offices for public use.
This situation reflects a broader initiative across Fiji to improve internet access in remote areas, highlighted by the government’s plan to establish 126 Starlink sites in locations such as Vanua Levu. These efforts aim to bridge the digital divide and open up opportunities for rural communities.
