Twenty-two sugarcane farmers in Fiji’s Western Division have been awarded a Pre-Season Burnt Cane Rehabilitation Grant, marking a significant first for the government in providing compensation to those impacted by pre-season cane fires. This grant aims to assist farmers who had their fields destroyed prior to the crushing season, a situation that has historically left them facing tremendous challenges.

Minister for the Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, acknowledged the hardships faced by farmers due to the lack of government mechanisms to support those affected by such incidents in previous years. He described the introduction of this grant as a groundbreaking initiative intended to alleviate some of the burdens on these farmers and aid in their recovery efforts.

Mistar Mohomand, a farmer from Balata, Tavua, who lost 7.5 acres of cane in a fire, expressed gratitude for the support, stating that this assistance boosts his confidence to continue farming.

Minister Singh emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the sugar industry, referencing their broader goal to increase annual sugar production by 200,000 tonnes over the coming five years. This initiative not only provides immediate financial relief but also supports efforts aimed at revitalizing the agricultural community.

This focus on recovery and growth draws parallels with previous government initiatives, including compensation plans for cane farmers affected by fires, and underscores the ongoing struggle against illegal cane burning and arson that has negatively impacted the sector. Farmers have previously called for urgent intervention against such destructive practices, as highlighted by the Sugar Cane Growers Council.

The government’s proactive approach, coupled with community engagement and innovative solutions, offers hope for a more resilient and productive sugarcane farming future in Fiji. By supporting the farmers during these critical times, the initiative represents not just financial aid but a commitment to the well-being of the agricultural sector as a whole.
