The eagerly anticipated opening of Fiji’s inaugural marine park at Fantasy Island Marina in Wailoaloa, Nadi, has been pushed back due to the reported theft of approximately one tonne of prime fish stock. This incident, which is believed to have taken place between December 21 and December 31, 2025, has inflicted substantial financial setbacks and disrupted years of dedicated conservation and breeding work, as stated by park management.

Abbas Ali, the managing director of Fantasy Company Fiji Ltd, discovered the loss upon his return from an overseas business trip on January 1, 2026. The stolen stock, cultivated over more than 25 years, included numerous valuable species such as mullet, milkfish, mangrove jack, trevally, puffer fish, grouper, spangled emperor, surgeon fish, breadfish, Russell’s snapper, reef trout, and barracuda.

The financial impact of the theft is significant, with Mr. Ali estimating losses of over $25,000. He expressed concern that this incident jeopardizes the planned opening of the marine park, which was set to welcome visitors this year. “More than 20 years of effort in building, breeding, and maintaining this marine ecosystem has been washed down the drain,” he lamented.

The Fantasy Island Marine Park is not just a tourism destination; it has been developed as a conservation and educational hub. The multi-million-dollar facility boasts state-of-the-art aquarium systems and habitats designed to mimic natural ecosystems. It is home to a variety of marine and freshwater species, including Japanese koi and turtles, and aims to educate both students and the broader community about the significance of preserving Fiji’s marine environments.

In response to the theft, local police have initiated an investigation following a formal complaint at the Nadi Police Station. In an effort to enhance security, Mr. Ali has called upon the community for help, offering a reward of $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the crime. This appeal highlights the importance of community involvement in protecting local ecosystems and resources.
