The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has condemned a recent break-in at the Fiji Muslim Women’s League Navua Branch, marking the first recorded robbery in the mosque’s long history. The incident was discovered by members of the Women’s League on Tuesday when they found that the door to a bulk storage room had been forcibly opened. Approximately $6,500 worth of assorted items were allegedly stolen.

Professor Prasad expressed his deep sadness regarding the attack and underscored the mosque’s sacred and historical significance, stating that such acts are unacceptable in society. He called for authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice and urged the community to unite in promoting peace, respect, and harmony within Fiji.

This incident comes amid a broader trend of sacrilege targeting religious sites in Fiji. For instance, similar incidents have occurred at the Dugapatu Mariamman Temple and Masjid Muhammadi, prompting concerns about the safety and sanctity of places of worship across the nation. Community leaders have called for increased vigilance and protective measures to safeguard these sacred spaces.

In light of these challenging times, there remains hope that the community will come together in support of their shared values and unite to combat intolerance. By fostering dialogue and understanding among different faiths, Fiji can build a more harmonious and respectful society. This collaborative spirit is vital for strengthening the bonds that hold diverse communities together in times of adversity.
