The Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji has expressed strong approval of Policing Minister Ioane Naivalurua’s recent declaration emphasizing the protection of sacred spaces for all religions. This statement comes as Fijian Hindus observe the week-long celebration of Shree Krishna Janmashtami, a significant festival in the Hindu calendar.
National Secretary Krishneel Tiwari praised the Fiji Police Force for their commitment to ensuring the safety of religious gatherings, noting proactive measures aimed at preventing desecration. As part of their security strategy, the Sabha has submitted a comprehensive list of temples, community halls, and worship homes to the Fiji Police Force’s Community Policing Division, reflecting their intention to increase security and regular patrols during this crucial period.
Tiwari further highlighted the collaboration with the Community Policing team, which is set to engage local communities on a range of pressing social issues, including drug abuse awareness, cyber-security, bullying, domestic violence prevention, and general safety protocols. This initiative underscores a broader effort to address community concerns while fostering a spirit of cooperation and unity.
The proactive stance adopted by the Fiji Police is particularly relevant in the wake of recent incidents targeting places of worship, such as the vandalism at the Shiv Mandir in Samabula, which has garnered significant public and governmental attention. Minister Naivalurua previously stressed the importance of safeguarding religious facilities, encouraging tailored security plans that can be adapted across various faith communities.
Leaders from various religious groups in Fiji have also called for constructive dialogue focused on mutual respect and understanding, hoping that recent sacrilege episodes can catalyze efforts towards unity and stronger interfaith relationships.
This collective commitment to protecting sacred spaces speaks volumes about the resilience and unity within Fiji’s diverse communities. During these turbulent times, there lies an opportunity for healing and collaboration among differing faiths, reinforcing the shared belief that together, Fiji can foster a harmonious and respectful society.
