Religious communities in Fiji reflect on the profound impact of the coups in 1987, 2000, and 2006, emphasizing the lasting scars inflicted on marginalized groups, including feelings of alienation and the destruction of places of worship. Faith leaders are advocating for reconciliation, underscoring the crucial role that education plays in this healing process, particularly for younger generations who may not be aware of the past events.

During the recent National Faith Leaders Dialogue on Reconciliation, Reverend Jone Tuiwaiwai of the Anglican Church highlighted the urgent need to communicate the significance of these historical events and the importance of forgiveness. He expressed concern that many young people remain unaware of their history, which limits their understanding of reconciliation.

Executive Director Shayal Shikha of the Shree Sanathan Dharam Prathinidhi Sabha emphasized how these coups created divisions along racial and religious lines, leading to disparate treatment among communities. She stated, “It resulted in a divisive structure where instead of treating people as a whole nation, differentiation based on racial and religious backgrounds began.”

Adding to this discourse, Chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Dr. Marcus Brand stressed that reconciliation is about purposeful remembrance—turning pain into understanding and division into unity. He remarked, “Reconciliation is not about forgetting; it is about transforming suffering into strength.” Dr. Brand also pointed out that true reconciliation is a spiritual journey that transcends legal frameworks and requires collective healing, compassion, and courage.

The event, which involved representatives from various faith communities, underscores the diverse religious landscape of Fiji and the collaborative effort required for healing. The preceding discussions at the National Faith Leaders Dialogue culminated in a significant commitment to reconciliation, truth-telling, and healing among Fiji’s faith leaders.

Given the historical tensions, these initiatives present a hopeful direction towards fostering unity and understanding amidst diversity. The ongoing dialogues indicate a commitment to addressing the wounds of the past while proposing a unified vision for Fiji’s future, highlighting the potential for reconciliation efforts to pave the way for a more harmonious society.
