Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica has highlighted the significance of Fiji’s exports to the United States during a recent parliamentary address. He noted that these exports are well-regarded and showcase the diverse array of products that Fiji offers, including bottled water, kava, fresh turmeric, cane sugar, seafood, and high-quality mahogany, among others.

Kamikamica revealed that approximately 18,000 small-holder farmers depend on the kava industry, while 5,000 farmers are tied to ginger, turmeric, and skincare products. The sugarcane sector also employs around 11,000 farmers. A study conducted by the Fiji Trade Commission North America indicated that for certain products like fresh turmeric and kava, the U.S. constitutes their entire export market. Moreover, about 70% of key exporters derive over 60% of their revenue from U.S. sales.

In terms of trade statistics, the U.S. has been a leading export destination for Fiji, taking about 20% of all goods exported from the island nation. In 2024, the value of Fiji’s exports to the U.S. was reported at $439.08 million, with imports from the same market totaling $425.03 million, resulting in a favorable trade surplus of $62.7 million for Fiji.

This trade dynamic underlines the critical importance of the U.S. market for Fijian exporters and highlights how vital these exports are to the livelihood of countless Fijian families. Given the existing challenges posed by recently introduced tariffs by the U.S. government, the Fijian government is taking a proactive approach to reevaluate and strengthen its trade relationships to ensure continued economic resilience and growth.

Kamikamica’s remarks suggest a hopeful outlook for Fiji’s trade prospects, emphasizing both the quality of its exports and the government’s commitment to sustaining valuable economic partnerships. As discussions with U.S. officials unfold, there remains potential for Fiji to adapt and find new opportunities in evolving trade conditions.
