In May, a total of 16,835 residents of Fiji left the country, according to the Fiji Bureau of Statistics. This figure includes 802 Fijians departing for extended trips of one to five years, with 472 of them leaving for employment purposes. In addition, 162 individuals are set to be away from Fiji for more than five years or permanently.
The statistics further reveal that 612 Fijians traveled abroad for periods ranging from three months to one year, among which 428 are pursuing work opportunities. The primary reasons for these departures include holidays (51.9%), visiting friends or relatives (33.6%), business engagements (7.6%), education or training (3.3%), and employment (2.1%).
This trend of Fijians seeking opportunities abroad aligns with previously reported figures, reflecting an ongoing pattern in migration as many individuals look for better prospects and experiences. While such departures can raise concerns regarding the impact on families and communities left behind, there is a positive outlook as those who gain international experience may return with enhanced skills that contribute to the development of Fiji’s economy.
The desire for personal growth and professional opportunities highlights the aspirations of Fijians, showcasing a dynamic workforce that continues to evolve. This movement is often part of a larger phenomenon of global mobility, underscoring the importance of these experiences in fostering cultural exchange and economic growth.
