Fiji’s Ex-Deputy PM to Face Plea in Asset Disclosure Case

Former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Biman Prasad is set to take his plea on charges related to statutory disclosure requirements and the provision of false information on December 8. Prasad appeared in Suva Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Yogesh Prasad, who is overseeing the case. He faces serious allegations including failing to declare his directorship in Platinum Hotels & Resorts Pte Limited as required by the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act 2013.

The charges stem from an incident in 2015, where Prasad allegedly omitted this key information from his annual declaration of assets, which is critical for maintaining transparency among political figures. In addition to the charge regarding the failure to disclose, he is also accused of submitting a materially false statutory declaration, as this omission rendered his declaration misleading.

Prasad’s legal representation consists of Senior Lawyer Richard Naidu from Munro Leys, while Acting Commissioner Lavi Rokoika represented the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) in court. Bail was set at $10,000, conditionally non-cash, and standard bail conditions were imposed, allowing for the progress of this contentious legal matter.

This case arrives at a time when scrutiny of political accountability is heightened in Fiji, following similar charges against other prominent government officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed confidence in his coalition government’s stability despite these legal issues, suggesting a resilience within the administration amidst challenges.

The developments surrounding Prasad’s case highlight the ongoing discourse in Fiji regarding ethical governance and the necessity of upholding integrity in public office. As this situation unfolds, it underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in fostering public trust in governmental institutions, pointing to potential reformative discussions that may arise from these challenges.
