The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Cooperatives, MSMEs and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, has urged the public to remain patient amidst increasing concerns over the delayed implementation of Fiji’s new eTicketing system. In response to growing frustrations related to card registration and customer service, Mr. Kamikamica convened a meeting with Vodafone Fiji, the company responsible for the e-ticketing service.

A significant portion of the Fijian population, estimated at one-third, relies on bus services, highlighting the importance of a smooth transition to this new system. Acknowledging public grievances, Kamikamica emphasized that the government is collaborating closely with Vodafone to address the ongoing challenges. “This is a significant transition… We’re working together to make the process faster and more accessible,” he stated on behalf of the government.

To facilitate a smoother registration experience, additional resources are being allocated. While the e-ticketing system aims to replace cash payments to enhance safety for both drivers and passengers, concerns persist regarding accessibility, particularly for those lacking access to mobile or digital services. However, the minister pointed out that offline top-ups are available on the new cards, alongside options for QR payments and digital transfers.

In the face of calls from some members of the public advocating for a return to cash payments, Kamikamica appealed for unity, urging Fijians to support the long-term benefits of the new system. Furthermore, he assured that the rollout would be closely monitored and that registration agents would be available throughout the country.

Previous reports illustrate similar challenges faced by users during the rollout of the e-ticketing system, and swift action from Vodafone following public dissatisfaction has often led to enhancements in the overall user experience. This encourages optimism, as stakeholder collaboration may yield significant improvements in Fiji’s public transport infrastructure.

As the government works to address existing issues, there is hope that the ongoing developments will ultimately lead to a more efficient, accessible, and customer-centric public transport environment for all Fijians.
