Environmental Impact Assessment consultants in Fiji have been put on notice regarding issues of fraud and misconduct. The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change conducted a round-table discussion with these consultants and approving authorities in Suva as part of their biannual commitments.
During this meeting, Permanent Secretary Dr. Sivendra Michael emphasized that the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process is a necessary component of every developmental project, not just a formality. He highlighted the trust and ethical standards expected of consultants, reminding them that the EIA process plays a vital role in ensuring environmentally just development that does not negate past progress.
Dr. Michael stated that any report lacking substance or integrity would face rejection from the technical review committee. He also reaffirmed that this process should not be viewed as an obstacle to development but rather as a measure to safeguard the environment. Principal EIA consultants are the only individuals authorized to prepare EIA reports, whereas associates may assist in developing Environmental Management Plans.
Moreover, he issued a strong warning against academic dishonesty, stating that any form of fraud or unethical behavior could lead to immediate deregistration under the Environment Management Act 2005. Dr. Michael’s firm stance aims to uphold high standards of accountability in the consultancy field, fostering a culture where consultants act responsibly, ensuring advancements align with Fiji’s environmental goals.
