Fiji’s Employment Relations Bill: A New Era of Collaboration?

In a joint announcement made yesterday by the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation (FCEF) and the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association (FHTA), officials are advancing the drafting of the Employment Relations Bill.

Agni Deo Singh, the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, engaged with the FCEF to address concerns that were recently highlighted in the media.

The discussions focused on how to effectively gather input on the draft amendments to the Employment Relations Act (ERA), establishing a timeline for tripartite discussions which are set to begin next week.

Employer representatives expressed their eagerness to participate in this process, as all parties are expected to collaborate in good faith to adhere to the proposed timeline. The goal is to have the draft ready for review by the Solicitor General’s Office, the Government’s Development Subcommittee, and subsequently, Cabinet and Parliament, following prior discussions with the Ministry.

Following this, the Bill will undergo further scrutiny and public consultations through the appropriate Parliamentary Standing Committee.
