The Minister for Employment, Productivity, and Industrial Relations, Agni Deo Singh, addressed Parliament today, confirming that comprehensive consultations had been carried out regarding the Employment Relations Amendment Bill. He highlighted that from January 8 to January 17, 2025, over 700 individuals participated in nationwide sessions designed to gather input from a diverse range of stakeholders.

Singh reported that the consultations encompassed feedback from various social partners, including the general public, who were invited to provide written submissions, with more than 80 responses received. Additional separate discussions were held with key organizations such as the Fiji Trades Union Congress (FTUC) and the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation (FCEF).

Acknowledging that complete consensus between employers and workers is unlikely, Singh remarked, “We consult with the workers, we consult with the employers, we bring them together, we pick up all the consensus matters, and the balance that is left is government’s call.” He expressed confidence that the government would take a balanced approach when making decisions.

As the legislative process progresses, Singh conveyed optimism that the Employment Relations Amendment Bill could be enacted in the upcoming parliamentary session.

This ongoing consultation process reflects a commitment from the Fiji government to create labor laws that harmonize the interests of both employees and employers, with the ultimate goal of fostering a conducive economic environment. Given the feedback from stakeholders and their active involvement, there is a hopeful anticipation that these new laws will better reflect the needs and challenges of the modern workforce in Fiji, contributing positively to the nation’s economic recovery and workplace relations.
