Fiji’s Employment Bill: A Collaborative Path Forward?

In a joint press release by the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation (FCEF) and the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association (FHTA) yesterday, it was announced that discussions are ongoing regarding the drafting of the Employment Relations Bill.

Agni Deo Singh, the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, met with the FCEF to address concerns that had been raised in the media.

The discussions focused on how to advance input on the draft amendments to the Employment Relations Act (ERA) through a timeline agreed upon for tripartite discussions, which are set to begin next week.

Employer representatives expressed eagerness to participate in this process, with all parties expected to engage in good faith to meet the proposed timelines required for the draft to be presented to the Solicitor General’s Office, the Government’s Development Subcommittee, and subsequently to Cabinet and Parliament, as outlined in discussions with the Ministry.

Following this, the Bill will be further examined, and public consultations will be held through the appropriate Parliamentary Standing Committee.
