Fiji’s Emergency Team Takes Off to Aid Vanuatu!

A twelve-member team from Fiji, known as the Fiji Emergency Medical Assistance Team (FEMAT), is set to depart for Vanuatu to aid in relief efforts. During a farewell event for the team, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the Permanent Secretary for Health, expressed gratitude to the members for their commitment to support their Pacific neighbors.

Dr. Tudravu emphasized the importance of their role, noting that they are not only representing the Ministry of Health but also the nation of Fiji itself. He acknowledged the personal sacrifices the team has made, leaving their families behind to fulfill this vital duty.

FEMAT is recognized as the first WHO-verified international Emergency Medical Team in the Pacific Islands, trained specifically to respond to emergencies and disasters throughout the region. The team’s self-sufficient group of health professionals is backed by the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, allowing them to be deployed effectively in times of crisis.

This deployment follows FEMAT’s prior assistance to Vanuatu in March 2023 after the region was affected by tropical cyclones Kevin and Judy. The ongoing commitment of FEMAT illustrates not only regional solidarity but also highlights Fiji’s proactive stance in providing humanitarian aid to those in need.

As these health professionals embark on their mission, their efforts not only represent hope for those affected in Vanuatu but also strengthen the bond between nations in the Pacific region.
