The government of Fiji is initiating major improvements to bolster emergency services across the nation, with a particular emphasis on the National Fire Authority (NFA). Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, characterized these enhancements as a significant investment intended to strengthen response capabilities and readiness, ensuring that assistance during emergencies is both swift and effective.
Nalumisa detailed ongoing projects aimed at improving community safety, which include the construction of new barracks for officers and additional fire stations to expand service coverage. The government has allocated $382,000 for civil work and fencing in the national budget for 2022-23, and an additional $1.3 million has been designated in the budget for 2023-2024 for construction efforts.
A notable highlight of this initiative is the upcoming headquarters set to be constructed in Komo Park, Samabula. This facility is expected to serve as a central hub for multi-agency disaster operations and will include a sub-station to better cater to the needs of nearby communities.
Similar developments have been noted in recent months, including the establishment of a new fire station in Natadola, driven by the rise in fire incidents and road accidents in the area. The NFA is also working on upgrading existing stations, such as the Levuka Fire Station, to enhance fire safety and emergency response services.
