Fiji’s Elite Powerlifting Team Set for Tough Oceania Showdown

The Fiji Powerlifting Federation has announced a strong contingent of 10 members set to compete in the Oceania Regional Powerlifting Championships, scheduled to take place in Nauru from October 30 to November 2. Federation president Viliame Lagonilakeba confirmed the lineup, which includes six athletes and four officials.

Lagonilakeba acknowledged the challenges ahead, noting that powerlifting is a significant part of Nauru’s culture, and several world champions have come from there, establishing Nauru as one of the toughest powerlifting nations globally. However, he expressed confidence in Fiji’s athletes, who are well-prepared and eager to showcase their strength and skills against the region’s best.

The Fiji team consists of the following athletes: Vivaan Patel (Men’s sub-junior U83kg), Vinesh Chand (Men’s Open U74kg), Faga Varea (Men’s Open U93kg), Muzammil Ali (Men’s Open U120kg), and Kurt Wise (Men’s Open U120kg, captain). The team officials include Eric Jioje (Head coach, non-traveling), Ryan Bale (non-traveling), Salacieli Koroi (Assistant coach, traveling), and Jessa May Banchod (Team manager/doctor, traveling).
