Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) is planning to submit a request for a review of electricity tariffs this year, indicating a potential increase in electricity rates. Chairman Rokoseru Nabalarua highlighted that Fiji’s electricity tariff is currently the lowest compared to New Zealand and Australia. He noted that despite the rising costs of living and increased wage rates, EFL had been unable to adjust tariffs since their last rejection two years ago.

Nabalarua emphasized the importance of a functional tariff review for maintaining a reliable electricity supply. He remarked, “Power is very essential. You don’t like to be like some of these Pacific Islands that are running out of power because they haven’t invested back into the infrastructure. And surely for us, we want to do it.” This reflects EFL’s commitment to investing in necessary infrastructure to avoid power shortages.

Historically, Fiji’s electricity tariffs have seen minimal adjustments; the last significant change happened in 2019 when rates increased by 2.74%. Since then, the rates have remained stable, highlighting EFL’s need for a new assessment.

The review request will be directed to the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC), which is integral in determining the future of electricity pricing in the region. Previous discussions with the FCCC indicate that stakeholder feedback will be considered in the regulatory process, ensuring transparency and inclusivity.

As Fiji faces rising electricity demand—up by 10% in the first seven months of this year—the need for a well-planned and funded energy strategy has never been more critical. Developing new energy sources and improving existing infrastructure will be key in supporting this growing demand while maintaining affordable rates for consumers.

The focus on sustainable energy and the planned investments in infrastructure underscore a positive outlook for Fiji’s energy sector, aiming to secure economic stability and energy availability for the future.
