Fiji’s Electoral Reforms: A Call for Change and Transparency

The Electoral Law Reform Commission in Fiji has expressed the importance of addressing electoral law flaws through reform, independent of constitutional changes, emphasizing the potential for improvement within existing legislation. Commissioner Deidre Brooks, with extensive experience in the elections office, criticized the misconceptions surrounding the electoral process, stating that many believe that parties operate equally. She explained that although there is a perception of fairness in political party funding due to a donation cap of $10,000, this does not factor in the advantages held by asset-rich parties.

Brooks highlighted the need for transparency as many believe the Fijian Elections Office has up-to-date knowledge of party members when, in reality, they only receive member information at registration and are not required to update it. This creates a misleading notion that voter engagement and party membership are accurately monitored.

She called for greater public engagement in shaping reforms and conveyed optimism that when given the opportunity, Fijians will express their desires for change. “If we’re recommending what they want, won’t they stand up and ask the Government for it?” she asked, expressing belief in the passionate nature of the Fijian people regarding democracy and national pride.

Public consultations for electoral law reform are set to begin next month, as the commission aims to ensure that Fijians’ voices are central in constructing a more equitable electoral system. This initiative aligns with previous discussions about revamping key legislative frameworks, promoting inclusivity, and enhancing civic participation in the democratic process.
