Unity Fiji Party leader Savenaca Narube is raising critical concerns about the government’s call for a second round of electoral reform consultations, expressing doubt regarding the efficacy of such efforts as the next election approaches in less than a year. He argues that this renewed push for consultations indicates a lack of success from the initial discussions, leading to increased uncertainty for voters.

Narube insists that without a clear and realistic outline from the government regarding its electoral reform plans, including considering alternative options, meaningful progress is unlikely. He highlighted that time is of the essence, stating, “Are we aware of the time? I think we really need to take stock of these issues,” reflecting his skepticism about the implementation of any broad-based reforms before the elections.

Echoing Narube’s concerns, Satish Kumar, a management board member of the Fiji Labour Party, has also criticized the government’s timing, labeling it as an “eleventh-hour” approach that fails to adequately address the public’s grievances regarding the electoral system which have been vocalized over the past three years. Kumar remains hopeful that proposed changes will ultimately contribute to a fairer and more transparent electoral process.

This situation is reminiscent of Narube’s previous critiques, where he underscored the inseparability of electoral reforms from necessary amendments to the 2013 Constitution. He has previously raised alarms about how inadequate reforms would perpetuate existing inequalities and challenges, particularly for smaller political parties given the D’Hondt electoral system in place.

The discussions surrounding these electoral reforms present an opportunity for genuine dialogue among political parties and citizens, as Fiji seeks to establish a more robust democratic framework. While there are concerns over the government’s commitment to substantial change, there remains hope that continued public engagement and advocacy for accountability could foster the inclusive governance that citizens desire.

As Fiji navigates this complex political landscape, it is critical for all stakeholders to remain engaged and push for reforms that align with the democratic aspirations of the nation. With ongoing conversations around electoral integrity, there is potential for positive change if the government recognizes and addresses the pressing needs of its constituents.
