Former Chief Justice Daniel Fatiaki has been appointed alongside three other prominent figures to serve as part-time Commissioners tasked with reviewing Fiji’s electoral laws. This team includes Professor Warden Narsey, a former politician, Seni Nabou, the former General Secretary of the National Federation Party, and Dr. Deidre Brooks, an expert in elections from New Zealand.

In his address, Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga emphasized the vital role of these experts, whose collective knowledge will help create an electoral framework rooted in democratic principles such as fairness, inclusivity, and transparency. He stated, “The integrity of Fiji’s electoral system is fundamental to the strength of our democracy,” highlighting the broader significance of ensuring that each Fijian’s voice is acknowledged and represented in the electoral process.

The review encompasses essential pieces of legislation, namely the Electoral Act 2014, the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act 2013, and the Electoral (Registration of Voters) Act 2012. Turaga stressed that this effort is more than a legal task; it’s a chance to modernize and strengthen Fiji’s electoral framework to meet both national and international standards.

The Commissioners will look into crucial areas such as women’s representation, the role of civil society, media independence, as well as the mechanisms for managing elections effectively. Extensive consultations with stakeholders, including government agencies, political parties, and civil society, will be pivotal in shaping the eventual recommendations and proposed reforms.

Turaga affirmed that the findings from this review will be compiled into a final report, accompanied by draft Bills and regulations to be submitted to the Attorney-General and the Ministry of Justice. He expressed optimism about the prospects of these reforms, stating that the review presents an opportunity for progress, accountability, and a reinforced faith in the electoral system.

This concerted effort to engage with stakeholders reflects a hopeful direction toward enhancing democracy in Fiji by fostering a more inclusive electoral process. With the potential for significant improvements to be made, the initiative embodies a commitment to responding to past criticisms of the electoral framework and empowering all citizens to participate fully in the democratic process.
