The Electoral Commission in Fiji has raised concerns about the expedited review process of the country’s electoral laws, emphasizing the need for a more thorough and inclusive consultation phase. On February 20, 2025, the commission expressed its apprehensions in a letter addressed to Justice Minister Siromi Turaga, with copies sent to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister for Finance Prof. Biman Prasad.

The commission’s statement highlighted that the tight timeline for the review might undermine the quality of the reforms intended to enhance electoral processes. They stressed the importance of conducting extensive public consultations to ensure a comprehensive array of stakeholder input rather than limiting discussions to selected groups. This call for inclusivity echoes a growing realization of the necessity to reform Fiji’s electoral framework to align with international best practices.

Despite these concerns, the government proceeded to appoint a four-member review committee led by former Chief Justice Daniel Fatiaki, which officially commenced its work on March 20, 2025. Justice Usaia Ratuvili, the Electoral Commission chair, acknowledged the compressed timeline but reiterated the commission’s commitment to supporting the commissioners in their tasks. He stated that this review marks a significant journey towards reforming electoral laws aimed at fostering a more fair and representative democracy.

Notably, the reviews are set to address key issues such as enhancing women’s representation, ensuring accountability among elected officials, and facilitating the participation of marginalized groups in the electoral process. With public engagement as a priority, there are hopes that these reforms will instill greater public confidence in Fiji’s electoral systems, transforming it into a more transparent and accountable democracy.

As Fiji moves forward with this vital endeavor, the collaborative approach involving various stakeholders signifies a hopeful path towards creating an electoral environment where every voice is valued and represented. The ongoing commitment to uphold democratic values through thoughtful reform presents an opportunity for constructive change, ultimately strengthening the political landscape for all Fijians.
