Fiji’s Electoral Crisis: Can Trust Be Rebuilt Before Elections?

Rebuilding public trust in Fiji’s electoral system is currently a top priority for the Fijian Elections Office due to findings from a recent Voter Perception Survey. Justice Usaia Ratuvili, the Chair of the Electoral Commission, has attributed the decline in public confidence to past incidents and a misunderstanding of technology’s role in the electoral process. He clarified, “People think that votes are counted automatically. That’s not the case. We still have hand counting.” The misunderstanding stems from glitches in previous elections, which have contributed to public skepticism. To counter this, Ratuvili reassured voters that rigorous verification methods are in place to safeguard the voting process, emphasizing that the controversial voting app will not be utilized in the upcoming elections.

The Fijian Elections Office is now concentrating its efforts on enhancing outreach and reform.
