The Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa, has lodged a police complaint against Barbara Malimali, the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). This report was filed on November 28 with Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew and alleges serious issues, including abuse of office, intimidation, and harassment of witnesses.
Acting Commissioner Chew has confirmed receipt of the report, indicating that investigations are currently underway. This complaint is linked to an ongoing inquiry by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) into Malimali’s actions, which have come under scrutiny from a Commission of Inquiry tasked with evaluating her appointment. Additionally, the CID is conducting a separate investigation regarding claims of misuse of office during Malimali’s previous role as Chair of the Electoral Commission.
FijiLive has reached out to FICAC for further comments on the situation.
The unfolding events present an opportunity for transparency in the electoral process in Fiji. As investigations progress, there is hope for greater accountability and integrity within the nation’s institutions. The active pursuit of truth and justice can lead to improved governance and public trust in electoral oversight.
