The integrity of Fiji’s electoral system is crucial for the nation’s democracy, according to Minister for Elections Siromi Turaga. At the launch of the electoral reform review, he emphasized that the review’s ambitious terms are necessary for strengthening democratic processes. Turaga stated, “Elections are not just about casting votes; they are about ensuring that every Fijian’s voice is heard and that the will of the people is reflected in just, transparent, and accessible processes.”
The review will assess key pieces of legislation, including the Electoral Act 2014, the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding & Disclosures) Act 2013, and the Electoral (Registration of Voters) Act 2012. Turaga noted that this is not simply a legal endeavor but an opportunity to modernize and reinforce the electoral framework, aligning it with both national and international obligations.
A significant focus of the review will be on improving participation and transparency in Fiji’s electoral laws, tackling important issues such as the representation of women, the role of civil society, media freedoms, the independence of electoral institutions, and the inclusion of persons with disabilities. The process will involve extensive consultations with a range of stakeholders, including government agencies, political parties, civil society organizations, the media, and electoral experts, ensuring a broad engagement aimed at gathering insights on existing challenges within the electoral framework.
The final outcome of the review will include a report, draft bills, and regulations to be submitted to the Attorney-General and the Minister for Elections. This reform initiative reflects a hopeful trajectory toward enhancing democracy in Fiji, creating a more inclusive and participatory electoral environment that empowers citizens and reinforces public confidence in the democratic process.
By actively pursuing these reforms, the Fijian government demonstrates its commitment to not only addressing past criticisms but also ensuring that every citizen’s voice is valued in shaping the future political landscape.
