As Fiji gears up for the general elections in 2026, the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) has initiated a comprehensive five-week Polling Venue Assessment (PVA) project. This effort aims to ensure a smooth, transparent, and credible electoral process, as emphasized by Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa during training for polling venue assessment assistants held recently in Suva.

Mataiciwa highlighted that the core objective of this project is to facilitate every eligible Fijian’s ability to vote with confidence and ease. She stated, “Your work will shape the success of the 2026 General Election,” underlining the importance of assessing the 1,468 polling venues across Fiji—855 on election day and 613 for pre-polling.

The FEO is committed to addressing challenges that may arise during this project, such as remote locations and last-minute venue changes, while ensuring that all polling venues are safe and accessible. The initiative not only reflects FEO’s dedication to electoral integrity but also reinforces the necessary steps in nurturing a democratic process that encourages voter engagement.

These efforts come in the context of ongoing preparations for local government elections, emphasizing the broader implications for enhancing civic participation and representation in Fiji’s political landscape. Minister of Local Government Maciu Nalumisa has previously noted the importance of voter education and adherence to electoral laws to empower communities.

Moreover, this initiative is set against the backdrop of previous concerns about electoral processes in Fiji, such as the technical issues faced during the 2022 elections, which have sparked a push for enhanced transparency and operational efficiency in future electoral practices.

Ultimately, the preparations represent a hopeful direction for Fiji’s democracy, focused on creating an electoral framework that fosters public confidence and facilitates community involvement, heralding a promising path forward for governance in the nation.
