The Fiji National University (FNU) Foundation has received a generous donation of $10,000 from the Chinese Embassy in Fiji, aimed at assisting underprivileged students and enhancing educational initiatives at the university. Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba highlighted that this contribution is part of a broader strategy to tackle educational inequality and bolster student wellbeing through various targeted programs.
The foundation’s efforts include several key initiatives such as scholarship programs, the Coffee Forward Initiative—which allows students and staff to pay for coffee that in turn funds meals for those in need—alongside support systems like the Veilomani Closet, which provides professional attire for students without resources, and the Food Pantry which addresses food insecurity among students.
Chinese Ambassador to Fiji Zhou Jian emphasized that this donation reaffirms China’s commitment to supporting education in Fiji and recognizes the enthusiasm of Fijian students towards their learning. The donation also coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Fiji, fostering goodwill and strengthening bi-lateral ties.
The FNU Foundation was established to ensure that financial obstacles do not impede students from pursuing higher education. Previous articles have shown the foundation successfully raising significant funds in its early days, showcasing the community’s commitment to nurturing educational opportunities amidst growing student debt concerns within FNU.
The collaborative efforts and investments in education reflect a hopeful trajectory towards enhancing access to education in Fiji, promoting overall community development and empowering students to achieve their academic goals. By providing necessary support, the FNU Foundation is playing a fundamental role in shaping a brighter future for Fijian youth.
