The recently established board of the Fiji Teachers Registration Authority (FTRA) is set to confront significant challenges within the country’s education system. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro outlined critical priorities, including improving literacy and numeracy, enhancing teacher competency, and addressing urgent issues affecting the sector.
Minister Radrodro expressed his confidence in the newly appointed board, noting that its members are seasoned professionals from the education field. He praised their willingness to take on this essential task, underscoring their expertise as pivotal for implementing necessary reforms.
Sangeeta Singh, Chief Executive of FTRA, pointed out that the new board will also tackle the ongoing teacher shortage and the challenges associated with teacher training and licensing. Among the notable board members are Ro Teimumu Kepa, Ana Kubuabola Raivoce, Simione Rasova, Dildar Shah, Peceli Rinakama, Kelera Taloga, and Govind Singh, all of whom bring diverse experiences to the table.
This board’s formation coincides with broader educational initiatives announced by Radrodro, including plans to enhance the qualifications of 395 teachers, who are set to receive an initial 50% salary upgrade, with the remainder due in January. These efforts reflect a recognition of teachers’ vital role and illustrate the government’s commitment to fostering a better educational environment in Fiji.
As the government focuses on enhancing educational standards, it is crucial to involve educators actively in the reform process. The establishment of the new board, combined with supportive initiatives for teachers, represents a hopeful prospect for Fiji’s educational future. With collaborative efforts from all stakeholders, there is great potential for positive transformation within the education system, ultimately benefiting students and creating a more enriched learning atmosphere.
