The newly established Fiji Education Commission faces a significant challenge as it embarks on reforming the country’s education system, a task acknowledged by its chair, Professor Vijay Naidu. He emphasized the importance of creating a resilient and inclusive educational framework that caters to all Fijians.

In a statement, Professor Naidu expressed gratitude towards those who entrusted him with this role and recognized the daunting nature of the task. He is optimistic about the team’s expertise and their commitment to comprehensive consultations and research, which are expected to conclude within six months. The Commission aims to finalize its recommendations in early 2026.

Professor Naidu highlighted a primary goal of the Commission: to ensure every child feels safe and valued in their educational experience, viewing schooling as an appealing opportunity for personal development. The Commission will also revisit the 2000 Education Commission report to evaluate previous recommendations and their implementation.

This initiative aligns with the government’s ongoing commitment to educational reform. Past announcements have included innovative strategies to address long-standing issues such as literacy gaps, teacher training deficits, and curriculum relevance. With experienced members like Filipe Jitoko, Kelera Taloga, and others part of the Commission, there is hope that their collaborative efforts will yield successful outcomes.

The urgency for reform in Fiji’s educational landscape reflects a collective recognition by stakeholders—educators, parents, and communities—of the necessity to provide every child with the opportunity to excel. As the Commission progresses, there is a shared aspiration for a transformative educational experience that not only meets current demands but also prepares students for future challenges.

This proactive approach creates an outlet for optimism as Fiji navigates through these reforms. There is a belief that a unified effort can yield a supportive learning environment, enhance educational quality, and inspire students to thrive in an ever-changing world.
