Fiji’s education system is set for significant reform, primarily focusing on a review of the so-called no-repeat policy, also known as the Automatic Progression policy, and the reintroduction of exam scaling. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro made the announcement during discussions related to the upcoming 2025-2026 budget, emphasizing the need for these changes based on recent concerning trends in student performance.
Radrodro noted that recent examination data revealed alarmingly high failure rates among students, particularly in Year Eight, where nearly 50% of the 19,350 students did not pass their exams. He suggested that the Automatic Progression policy, which allows students to move to the next grade regardless of their academic performance, has inadvertently fostered a culture of complacency, hindering educational outcomes. As part of the reforms, a Cabinet paper addressing this policy will be prepared for decision-making, with public consultations planned to gather opinions from various stakeholders.
The Minister’s proposal also includes centralizing the marking of examinations. This initiative aims to provide more timely results, enhance security and consistency in grading, and ensure markers can work independently. In conjunction with these measures, a comprehensive review of the National Curriculum Framework will be initiated, marking the first update since 2013, with an allocated budget of $33,000.
Radrodro emphasized the need for this curriculum review to align with contemporary learning methods and to address feedback from educational stakeholders about the current framework’s relevance. Such actions are seen as essential in reinforcing academic standards and ensuring students are adequately prepared for future challenges.
This initiative is part of a broader commitment to improving the educational landscape in Fiji, reflecting a proactive approach to engage various community members—including parents, educators, and industry experts—through consultations. These discussions align with Sustainable Development Goal 4, which seeks to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all.
As these reforms advance, there is optimism that a revised educational framework will enhance student engagement and performance while addressing diverse learning needs across Fiji.
