Fiji’s Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, has highlighted the urgent need for legislation governing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) studies, noting that such issues are inadequately covered under the Education Act of 1966. He stressed that a thorough review of the Act is essential to reflect the modern educational landscape, especially as TVET has been largely neglected by current laws.

Mr. Radrodro pointed out the pressing need for legal expertise to help address these gaps and to collaborate effectively with the Fiji Law Reform Commission. This initiative will involve the issuance of an expression of interest (EOI) to attract qualified legal drafters who will undertake a substantial evaluation of the existing educational frameworks.

The review aims not only to address the shortcomings in TVET but also to consider other educational regulations, such as the Higher Education Commission Act of 2008. The appointed legal drafters will carry out a comprehensive gap analysis over the next four months as part of this modernization effort for Fiji’s educational system.

This review aligns with the ongoing push by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for educational reforms that cater to the changing needs of the community and education sector. By modernizing the legal framework, Fiji aims to enhance its educational offerings and better prepare students for the challenges of today and tomorrow.

Overall, this initiative represents a promising advancement toward creating a more inclusive and adaptable educational system that addresses previously overlooked areas. The potential outcomes could greatly benefit various educational sectors, including TVET, creating a supportive environment conducive to student growth and success.
