Fiji’s Education Funding: A Boon or a Burden?

The Tertiary Scholarship and Loan Services (TSLS) has allocated $1.44 billion to support around 70,000 students over the last decade, demonstrating a substantial investment of taxpayer funds in Fiji’s education system.

This financial support has played a critical role in enhancing tertiary education and training programs, underscoring the government’s commitment to higher education.

Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro addressed Parliament, revealing changes to eligibility for student loans. He noted that previously, any student who met the academic criteria for tertiary institutions could access loans, but this is no longer the case.

Currently, about 19,000 students have gained admission to various university programs but are studying privately because they did not meet the requirements for scholarships or loans.

Radrodro further explained that the former administration had created a sustainable funding model for tertiary education, establishing a revolving fund aimed at supporting future students.

“Unfortunately, the current Government has adopted a financial model that is not sustainable, requiring taxpayers to contribute approximately $150 million each year for tertiary education,” he stated.

Additionally, the government has imposed a 50 percent penalty on students who forfeit their bonds to pursue opportunities abroad.
