Fiji’s Education Dilemma: Bridging the Tertiary Gap

Spread the love

In Fiji, only about 30 percent of the approximately 15,000 students who leave the schooling system transition to tertiary education. This statistic was shared by Steve Chand, Chairman of the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF), during a recent meeting in Suva with a delegation from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Chand emphasized the importance of re-engaging the 70 percent of students who do not continue their education, particularly through vocational training programs. “Our concern is providing a safety net for the 70 percent,” he noted. The meeting also addressed the pressing need for skills development and training within the educational sector.

Furthermore, Chand highlighted the emerging concept of “education tourism,” which he explained is becoming increasingly relevant as countries like New Zealand consider capping the intake of international students. This shift could potentially redirect students who might otherwise study in Australia or New Zealand to Fiji, which is positioning itself as a regional hub for education. The University of the South Pacific (USP) plays a vital role in this effort, serving as a destination for students from 14 Forum Island countries.

The discussions also explored potential partnerships and investment opportunities between Fiji and the UAE, alongside enhancements to HECF’s accreditation processes.

This proactive approach by Fiji demonstrates the country’s commitment to improving its education system and harnessing opportunities for growth through international collaboration. By focusing on vocational training and attracting regional students, Fiji is setting the stage for a more inclusive and robust educational landscape, which could pave the way for enhanced economic development in the long term.

It’s a hopeful sign that despite the challenges, there are strategic initiatives underway aimed at uplifting educational standards and expanding access to higher learning.
