Around 19,000 private students in Fiji are facing financial challenges as they have lost access to affordable Tertiary Education Loans Scheme (TELS) loans, leading to difficulties in funding their studies. Opposition MP Premila Kumar raised these concerns during a recent national budget debate in Parliament. She pointed out that despite completing their education, many graduates find themselves unemployed, unable to take advantage of overseas job opportunities due to stringent loan repayment conditions or bonding requirements.

Kumar criticized the recent budget for being “glaringly silent” on the issues of youth unemployment and the exodus of skilled workers from Fiji. She expressed that Fijians seek stability, decent jobs, and a promising future for their children, asserting that the current budget fails to address these vital concerns.

The situation echoes sentiments shared by other lawmakers, such as Independent MP Virendra Lal, who also emphasized the need for measures to retain students in Fiji. He suggested implementing sustainable financial models and highlighted that many graduates are leaving the country without contributing their skills and knowledge locally, a phenomenon often described as brain drain.

Additionally, past articles reported on the financial challenges faced by students under the TELS, with calls for flexible repayment schemes to alleviate burden. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro previously noted that the financial strain on the TELS has resulted in significant deficits, affecting students’ ability to continue their education. He argued for better accountability measures to address the high rates of non-completion and student dropouts.

This ongoing dialogue showcases a crucial moment for Fiji’s educational system, highlighting the need for reform and a realignment of the financial support systems to ensure that students can complete their education and contribute positively to Fiji’s economy. As stakeholders continue to advocate for change, there remains hope that concerted efforts may pave the way for a more supportive environment for students, ensuring that education is accessible and leads to greater opportunities for the future.
