The Fijian Ministry of Education is embarking on a significant revision of the Education Act from 1966 to better meet the demands of modern educational needs. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro announced that the comprehensive review of the Act, officially approved by the Cabinet in September 2024, is advancing well. The Ministry is targeting the submission of a draft Education Bill for Cabinet consideration by July 2025.
Radrodro noted that the current legislation, which has seen only a few amendments since its inception, is outdated. He stressed the importance of addressing gaps in areas critical to today’s education system, such as digital learning, inclusive educational practices, teacher professional development, and contemporary financing mechanisms. He further elaborated on the need to improve governance, accountability, health and safety in schools, and provision for early childhood education.
A dedicated Education Review Team, established to guide this process, is working alongside various stakeholders, ensuring that the updated legislation reflects the voices and aspirations of all Fijians. Radrodro emphasized the importance of an inclusive consultation phase that will allow the community, including students, educators, and families, to provide valuable insights during the formulation of the new legislation.
This initiative aligns with previous workshops and discussions that highlighted the necessary updates to the educational framework, recognizing the significant changes in societal and technological landscapes since 1966. By actively engaging stakeholders throughout this process, the Ministry aims to facilitate a responsive and adaptive educational environment, paving the way for a system that will enhance learning outcomes and better prepare Fiji’s youth for future challenges.
The positive momentum surrounding these reforms signals hope for a more effective, inclusive, and contemporary education system in Fiji, equipping future generations with the skills necessary to thrive in an ever-evolving world.
