The review of Fiji’s Education Act, established in 1966, is progressing as Education Minister Aseri Radrodro confirmed that the amended legislation is expected to be presented in Parliament by August 2025. Ongoing public consultations aim to incorporate a broad range of perspectives, ensuring that the revised law reflects the needs and aspirations of all stakeholders involved.
The consultations, which began in May, play a crucial role in shaping the legislation. Minister Radrodro emphasized the importance of these discussions in gathering valuable insights from students, educators, and community members. Once the consultations conclude, the Ministry will validate submissions before presenting the proposed amendments to Cabinet, followed by a parliamentary review.
Radrodro highlighted that the current Act, which has been in place since the 1960s with only minor updates, is outdated and no longer aligns with contemporary educational demands. Key areas identified for improvement include digital literacy, inclusive educational practices, and teacher professional development. The aim of the revised law is to create a modern, inclusive, and effective educational framework that caters to the future needs of Fiji’s youth.
This initiative is part of a broader effort, supported by previous discussions and workshops, to address critical gaps and redefine the educational landscape in Fiji. The comprehensive consultation and review process illustrates a commitment to fostering a responsive educational environment, ultimately leading to better learning outcomes for future generations.
As progress continues, there is a renewed sense of optimism that these reforms will bring about significant improvements, preparing Fijian students for the challenges and opportunities of an ever-evolving world. By actively engaging the community throughout this initiative, the Ministry of Education is paving the way for a more effective and adaptable educational framework.
