The Ministry of Education in Fiji has successfully completed a workshop dedicated to reviewing the Education Act of 1966. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro expressed profound appreciation for the valuable contributions made by all stakeholders involved in the review process, including educators, community representatives, and statutory bodies.
During the workshop, significant challenges within the current educational framework were identified, particularly issues relating to school governance and management. Participants expressed concerns over areas such as managerial accountability and role ambiguity, which can hinder effective educational delivery. Additionally, discussions centered on necessary reforms in curriculum and assessment, as well as health and safety measures across schools.
Stakeholders, including representatives from the Fiji Teachers Registration Board, Higher Education Commission, and various faith-based organizations, actively engaged in deep discussions regarding the challenges and opportunities within the Education Act. Minister Radrodro emphasized the importance of simplifying the education system to make it more effective, transparent, and accountable, ensuring that it meets the diverse needs of students and society.
Looking ahead, the Ministry plans to conduct further inter-ministerial consultations along with extensive public consultations to ensure that the revised Act addresses contemporary educational needs. The support of key legal perspectives from the Fiji Law Reform Commission and the Office of the Solicitor General during the workshop was also acknowledged.
This initiative reflects a continued commitment to modernizing Fiji’s educational framework in response to evolving policies and priorities, as highlighted in previous reviews and discussions. The ongoing reform brings a hopeful outlook for an education system that is not only adaptive but also capable of better preparing future generations for the challenges they will face.
The collaboration shown among diverse stakeholders signifies a proactive approach towards a more inclusive and effective educational environment which promises enhanced academic outcomes for students in Fiji.
