The Fiji Education Act Review Committee, alongside the Fiji Law Reform Commission, officially presented their comprehensive report on the Education Act to Acting Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga and Minister for Education Hon. Aseri Radrodro on July 15, 2025. This momentous event, marked by Minister Radrodro as a “historic milestone,” signifies the first thorough reevaluation of the Education Act, established in 1966, in almost sixty years.

This review represents a crucial shift in modernizing Fiji’s educational framework, aimed at addressing contemporary challenges and ensuring that the legal structure reflects the educational needs of today’s society. The Ministry emphasized that the review is essential to modernize the Act, tackle educational challenges, and ensure the law aligns with the current and future needs of Fijian students.

Public consultations that have been conducted played a vital role during the review process. Engaging various stakeholders, including community members, educators, and particularly students, has been integral to gathering diverse perspectives. The Ministry highlighted that these consultations included both face-to-face and virtual forums, leading to a comprehensive understanding of critical areas such as education access, curriculum development, governance, and teacher welfare.

The ongoing efforts to update the Education Act align with previous initiatives aimed at promoting an educational framework that supports digital literacy, inclusivity, and the evolving needs of Fijian youth. This proactive approach has involved collaboration with various ministries, ensuring that the revised Act is responsive to a range of issues affecting education today, from governance structures to health measures within schools.

As Minister Radrodro noted, the urgency of reforming the Education Act stems from its outdated nature and the necessity to foster an educational environment that is not only inclusive but also adaptable to future dynamics. Consequently, the upcoming legislative amendments promise to usher in significant transformation within Fiji’s educational landscape.

This review fosters optimism for a more effective education system in Fiji, one that could significantly enhance learning opportunities and outcomes for students, preparing them for the challenges of a rapidly changing world. With active community engagement and a commitment to modern practices, there is a sense of hope that these reforms will lead to a brighter educational future for all Fijians.
