“Fiji’s Economy: Growth for the Few?”

Opposition Member of Parliament Premila Kumar has voiced strong critiques regarding the Government’s economic strategies, asserting that they mainly benefit a select group rather than the general populace. During her address in Parliament, Kumar highlighted the grim reality faced by everyday Fijians, noting that the cost of living has surged to such an extent that fundamental goods and services are becoming unaffordable luxuries.

Kumar emphasized the challenging decisions families must make, such as choosing between purchasing medicine or groceries and paying rent or electricity bills. She contrasted this with the Government’s claims of a robust economy, asking, “If this is true, where is the impact? Who is benefiting?” She pointed out that hardworking farmers are grappling with escalating input costs, nurses and teachers are leaving for better opportunities overseas, and small business owners are finding it increasingly difficult to stay afloat.

According to Kumar, the Government’s policies appear to favor multinationals and the elite, while the majority of the population struggles with poverty and marginalization. She contended that the administration has prioritized statistical figures over the real needs of Fijians, arguing for an economic framework that uplifts all citizens rather than just the wealthy few.

Kumar proposed several measures to rectify this situation, including lowering VAT on essential goods to lessen the burden on families, supporting small businesses, and creating enticing opportunities to retain skilled workers. She stressed that authentic success should be measured not by graphs and statistics but by the well-being and dignity of the people.

Kumar’s comments shed light on the growing concerns regarding economic inequality in Fiji. As communities grapple with financial challenges, her call to action invites the Government to reconsider its approach and prioritize policies that would foster a more inclusive economy.
