There is a significant gap between government reports and the realities faced by everyday Fijians, according to Opposition MP Premila Kumar. She expressed skepticism towards Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad’s optimistic portrayal of Fiji’s economic growth, increased revenue, and positive outlook during a recent discussion.

Kumar raised critical questions about why the supposed economic progress is not being felt by ordinary citizens. She pointed out that while official statistics may indicate success, they do not translate into improved living conditions for the people of Fiji. “If the economy is doing well, why are our people not feeling it?” she questioned, emphasizing that statistical growth does not alleviate the ongoing struggles many families face.

Highlighting the increasing cost of living, Kumar noted that basic items such as bread and butter have become unaffordable for some families. She criticized the government for failing to follow through on campaign promises to lower costs, citing the price of bread surging from 71 cents to $1, and the cost of a 500-gram block of butter approaching $14. Kumar lamented that many families are left to make tough choices between essential needs such as medicine and groceries, or rent and electricity.

Additionally, she condemned the elimination of free bus fares for citizens over 60, a benefit provided by the previous administration, which she deemed detrimental to the elderly population.

This ongoing discourse highlights the critical importance of connecting numerical growth to the lived experiences of citizens. It underscores the need for policies that genuinely address the financial burdens faced by families in Fiji. A positive takeaway from this situation might be the growing dialogue among politicians and community members about practical solutions to improve living conditions and support for vulnerable populations.

Overall, it is essential for governments to ensure that economic improvements lead to real change in people’s lives, fostering a more inclusive approach to prosperity.
