Fiji’s electronic ticketing (e-ticketing) system for public transport, initiated in 2017, continues to face challenges that affect its users. Vijay Kumar, the director of Westbus, which operates a fleet servicing the Nadi-Denarau route, highlighted the need for improved accessibility to e-ticketing cards, stating that the current requirement for passengers to visit Vodafone outlets for registration is a significant barrier. He suggested that e-transport cards should be made readily available at bus stands to ensure better compliance among users.
While the system aims to phase out cash transactions to prevent revenue loss to illegal operators, many passengers still resort to cash payments due to their inability to obtain e-cards. This situation is exacerbated by fines imposed on drivers by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) for accepting cash payments.
In response to ongoing concerns, Irfaz Mohammed from Vodafone Fiji acknowledged the struggles faced by passengers and stated the company is working on solutions. The availability of top-ups at various agents can depend on individual preferences, but Vodafone reassured users that it is committed to enhancing the system’s accessibility and user-friendliness.
One promising development on the horizon is a new e-ticketing app that will allow passengers to manage their travel more conveniently. This app is set to facilitate features such as tracking balances, monitoring transaction history, and topping up cards remotely using M-PAiSA, among other functionalities. This digitization aligns with the government’s broader goals to modernize Fiji’s transportation infrastructure.
Additional initiatives are anticipated to address various modes of transport including shipping and taxis, reflecting a commitment to continual improvement and innovation in public transport systems. The optimism surrounding these advancements highlights a shared goal of fostering a more efficient and accessible transport system for all citizens in Fiji.
Overall, while challenges persist, the focus on technology and user-centric solutions promises a hopeful outlook for the future of Fiji’s public transportation.
