The Fiji Bus Operators Association (FBOA) has emphasized the importance of respecting the decisions made by an independent tender committee in relation to the e-ticketing system. This statement comes in response to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s recent remarks about potentially enhancing bus services and inviting additional service providers into the e-ticketing market. FBOA president Rohit Latchan expressed concern over the current confusion surrounding the e-transport upgrade process being conducted by Vodafone.
Latchan clarified that the operational issues related to upgrading e-transport cards do not affect the ongoing bus services. He reassured commuters that they can continue using their old bus cards without interruption, urging the Prime Minister to handle discussions on electronic ticketing with caution to prevent further misunderstanding.
He acknowledged Vodafone’s efforts to expand card upgrade locations to alleviate some of the transition challenges faced by users. However, he pointed out that introducing new service providers may not effectively address the core issues stemming from the upgrade process. The FBOA has voiced its satisfaction with the current contract awarded to Vodafone through an independent tender.
A previous article highlighted Prime Minister Rabuka’s concerns regarding the reliance on a single e-ticketing provider and the ongoing complaints from the public about system inefficiencies, such as faulty top-ups and inadequate customer service. These frustrations have escalated to the point where elderly passengers have experienced distress due to lengthy waiting times while resolving their transportation needs. This situation has prompted the government to take a proactive approach, involving discussions between Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica and Vodafone to ensure the system addresses the needs of all commuters efficiently.
Despite the current challenges faced by users, there is hope that the government and Vodafone’s commitment to improving the e-ticketing framework will lead to a more streamlined and user-friendly public transportation experience in Fiji. Stakeholders are encouraged to work collaboratively to ensure that all Fijians benefit from efficient and accessible transportation solutions, reinforcing the notion that constructive communication and proactive measures can lead to significant improvements in public services.
