The Counter Narcotics Bureau Bill in Fiji will propose stricter penalties to tackle the drug crisis more effectively, according to Assistant Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Ratu Rakuita Vakalalabure. Speaking at the workshop inaugurating the Bill, Vakalalabure highlighted the necessity of robust legislation to not only steer the legal framework but also to aid enforcement officers in their fight against drugs.

He stated, “We’ll be introducing some harsh penalties, probably as a deterrent, given that the drug issue in Fiji is significant.” Vakalalabure noted that while details are not yet finalized pending consultations, tougher penalties will definitely be introduced.

He emphasized the importance of the consultation process and expressed that support from international partners would bolster efforts against drug trafficking. “The Coalition Government has been eager to implement this as soon as possible,” he remarked.

Vakalalabure also assured that the views of all stakeholders will be considered, stressing that the issue impacts everyone. He mentioned that neighboring countries Australia and New Zealand are fully supportive and collaborating with the ministry and other stakeholders in the battle against drugs.

The Government aims to have the Bill passed by the Parliament in either November or December, or at the latest, early next year.
