The Fiji Police Force has clarified that it will call upon the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) only when there is intelligence suggesting a potential security risk during drug raids. Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci stated that collaboration between the police and military has been essential for significant drug operations, especially when risks to police officers are identified.

These remarks follow comments from Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs Pio Tikoduadua about enhancing the military’s role in the fight against drugs and discussions on the possibility of police officers being armed. This has sparked concerns regarding the potential militarization of police forces and whether armed officers are truly necessary.

Raikaci indicated that existing arrangements facilitate cooperation between the police and military in response to security threats during major drug operations. He emphasized that the current threat assessments do not warrant arming police officers; however, the force is continuously reviewing trends in organized crime and security threats in the region.

Our focus should shift towards proactive measures against organized crime rather than merely reacting to incidents. Raikaci pointedly stated that discussions on arming police should also include considerations for gun control measures, proper training, and a focus on community policing that prioritizes de-escalation over confrontation.

The debate about the involvement of military personnel alongside police officers highlights questions about public safety and the capabilities of the Fiji Police Force. As the country confronts drug-related challenges, there are significant opportunities to reflect on the future of policing and what steps can be taken to enhance both safety and community trust.

In conclusion, Fiji is at a crucial juncture in determining the approach to policing and crime control. A collaborative strategy that integrates the capabilities of both the police and military, while focusing on community engagement and safety, will be key in navigating this complex issue.
