Osea Raicama Dakai, the head of the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) intelligence unit, is set to take his plea on July 28 in connection with serious allegations involving the importation of over 4.8 kilograms of methamphetamine. The drugs were discovered at Nadi International Airport on May 16, 2025. Dakai is charged with unlawful importation of illicit drugs and breaching the Secrecy Oath under the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service Act 1998.

During a court appearance in Lautoka, Mr. Dakai, represented by lawyer Simione Valenitabua, faced these charges alongside two Counter Narcotics Bureau officers, Apenisa Matadigo and Uraia Bolalailai, and several other individuals, including suspended police officers and a Nigerian national. Prosecutor Zenrith Zunaid indicated that additional legal documentation related to the case would be submitted, emphasizing the need to ensure there is no duplicity in the charges.

This case is a part of a broader crackdown on drug trafficking activities in Fiji, highlighting increasing concerns about integrity within law enforcement. The involvement of multiple officers in this case underscores the serious challenges authorities face in combating drug-related crimes. Concerns about corruption have prompted enhanced scrutiny and efforts to restore public trust in law enforcement agencies.

Despite the severity of these allegations, there is hope that the ongoing judicial process can lead to a safer community. The commitment from Fijian authorities to maintain accountability and integrity within law enforcement reflects a proactive stance against narcotics trafficking. Continued legal action against those involved in drug crimes is seen as an essential step towards fostering a safer environment for all residents in Fiji.
