The Fiji Police Force has confirmed that there are currently no large-scale drug manufacturing laboratories operating within the country, as reiterated by Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu during a press conference. This assurance follows extensive intelligence efforts and teamwork with local, regional, and international law enforcement agencies.

Tudravu emphasized that while Fiji is not a site for commercial drug production, it is increasingly being used as a trans-shipment hub for illicit drugs en route to more lucrative markets. Reports suggest that smaller scale methamphetamine production is happening on the island, primarily by individuals lacking the necessary expertise. These small operations often involve dangerous chemicals that pose significant health risks to both the producers and the community at large.

The police are actively partnering with organizations such as the Pacific Transnational Crime Network and the Australian Federal Police to share intelligence and combat transnational organized crime. Acknowledging the associated rise of major crimes linked to drug activity, Commissioner Tudravu highlighted the importance of community vigilance and cooperation in addressing these challenges.

“Drugs can be concealed in various ways, including being hidden in vessels, cargo, or carried by individuals,” Tudravu explained, urging a holistic community approach to tackle the drug trade effectively. To bolster these efforts, he intends to collaborate with community leaders and organizations for support and guidance.

The police’s proactive measures have led to a 37 percent increase in drug raids compared to the previous year, showcasing a strong commitment to combatting drug-related issues. The collective drive between law enforcement and the public suggests a hopeful path forward, as they work together to maintain the integrity and safety of their communities.

The ongoing situation underscores the need for continuous public awareness and proactive measures to ensure a safer Fiji for all its residents.
