The Fiji Police Force has reported a total of 6,659 drug-related cases over the last five years, with a significant peak of 1,615 cases recorded in the previous year. Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci presented these statistics during the opening of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Annual Conference in Sigatoka.

Raikaci noted a 31% decrease in drug cases in 2021, attributing this decline to restrictions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he emphasized that this drop does not necessarily indicate a reduced involvement in drug-related activities.

The Fiji Police continue to enhance their efforts through community outreach and targeted operations, which have resulted in numerous arrests and prosecutions, particularly during the festive season. Raikaci stated, “We are going to schools, churches, communities, and Provincial Meetings. Our festive season operations continues to see more arrests.”

He acknowledged the government’s ongoing commitment to combat drug issues, highlighted by the establishment of a new Narcotics Bureau. Raikaci also urged legal practitioners to weigh the government’s anti-drug initiatives against the rights of individuals implicated in drug offenses as they fulfill their professional responsibilities.

The DPP Conference is set to conclude today, reflecting a continued focus on addressing drug-related challenges in Fiji.

In conclusion, while the statistics may seem concerning, they also signify a sustained commitment from authorities to tackle drug-related issues. The emphasis on community engagement and enhanced law enforcement strategies showcases a proactive approach to creating a safer environment for all Fijians.
