Fiji’s Drug Crisis: Rising Arrests and Community Call to Action

The Fiji Police Force is reporting a steady increase in daily cases of illegal drug possession, with marijuana being the most frequently encountered substance.

Assistant Commissioner of Police for Operations, Livai Driu, revealed that many of those arrested are in their 20s and 30s.

From the 18th until now, police have registered eighteen reports across all five divisions, which include operations where marijuana plants were uprooted from a farm, in addition to seizures conducted during snap searches and house raids.

While marijuana remains the most commonly seized drug, there have also been sporadic cases involving methamphetamine.

ACP Driu highlighted the increasing support from the community, noting a higher demand for police-led awareness initiatives in partnership with various organizations.

He underscored the necessity of maintaining public trust, ensuring that police officers act with integrity and contribute to the efforts against drug-related issues.

The public is urged to provide information through the hotline 917 or Crime Stoppers at 919.
